Mistrust

01/09/2022

I am Mistrust,

And you, I'll never trust.

You promise you won't judge,

You promise you won't tell,

Yet from my former life I've learned

That humans-- they don't care.

They do not mind to lie;

You cannot trust in them.

There's only one I'll ever trust,

And that person's myself.

You may be wondering

How I became like this--

This wretched, lone, untrusting soul

That cannot live in peace.

Why every passing day

I look around dismayed,

As if somehow my long past life

With all its secret tales,

Were chasing me with all its might

To bury me in shame.

Well let me just be blunt,

Somebody broke a bond;

They filled my life with lies and toil,

They trampled on my soul.

Henceforth I made my oath,

I swore I'd never trust;

Forever to be known

As one they call mistrust.
