The Scars We Hide
When we're young we live our lives
Without fear, regret, or lies.
We just sing and laugh and play
Not realizing that some day
What we love will fall away,
And this life will bring dismay.
Then the fateful day arrives
When life breaks before our eyes--
Some by broken love or lies,
Others by mistakes are marred;
And we go throughout our lives
Hiding each one of our scars.
Some arrive at drastic measures
Shunning all the present pleasures.
Some are drawn to cynicism
Others hide in optimism.
Some are open, blindly trusting,
Others closed and quite mistrusting.
Each one hiding unaware
That the dreadful pain we bare
Should not be borne on our own,
Since we're never really alone,
For we're all in this together.
You must know you're not alone;
You may hide your pain from others,
But true friends will always know.
Just remember that its time
To embrace the scars you hide,
For, although these scars are painful,
They're reminders of your strength.
Each mark born has slowly made you
Into who you are today.
And I'd never trade that person,
Though quite broken you may be,
For it was that imperfection
That enabled our friendship.
